Ray Keith - DJ, Producer, Remixer,
Record Label Head Honcho, Radio & TV Presenter and one of the orginal Drum
& Bass pioneers, has been on the circuit for at over 15 years. When
he teamed up with Loopmasters for his first ever sample pack he was always
going to produce some of the darkest samples and breaks on the planet! Check
out this interview with the man himself ahead of the release… Ez mate, thank you kindly for taking some
time off the drum and bass production and answer a few of our questions our
readers might like to know about you and your current projects. How is your djing and productions going
this year and whats up with you right now in your opinion? We have been very busy, last year I had a tune out
called gladiator and king of fire that came out on penny black, that promo'd in
Jan. Sometimes what we do is work 3 or 4 months ahead, cause you know that in
Jan, Feb and March are a little bit slow, so towards the end of last year we
were really busy in the studio. I just relocated my studio back to my house; it
gives us a bit of time. Blade runner's album came out; I’m DJing quite a bit.
Actually I’m enjoying DJing more now than I ever have, because before I was out
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for about 10 years, running up and down
the country. Now, I’m not getting a bit more picky, but I’m doing 2 hour shows,
and its more spread out and I have more time to spend with my family and watch
my 2 daughters grow up, and I’m loving it. I’m still very busy, Friday during
the day I am doing some teaching down at Ministry [of sound], Friday night we
have a show, and Saturday I am DJing at the drum and bass awards in Birmingham. What’s your all time best Ray Keith drum
and bass track in terms of production and sound quality? Do you know what, I have been asked this question loads
of times, and I cant answer it. If you look at my discography, we have done
loads. I have had some blinding tracks at different times of my life, and they
represent different times in my life. So when I made renegade terrorist it was
93-94, then I made something out there, which came on UFO recordings which was
another hit which was 2000, so there is a 6 year gap, and in 2003 I did I bring
in the future. There are so many tracks that I have done at different points in
my life, I give thanks for that point in my life where I was, that’s how I was
feeling or what I was part of. I wouldn’t want to take anything away from them
cause I created them and loved them all, so to single a tune out, because all
of them are a big part of me. What projects are you working on
currently and what’s up in the near future for your Record Label, “Dread
Recordings”? Mainly working on the album for next year. Going to be
releasing our dub label [dub dred], which is representing a dub format, whether
you were to call that dubstep or old school we are going to be putting out a
few tunes through that. Dred Recordings is going well and we also have UFO
recordings, which is what we school our new artists on so basically our new artists
are blade runner, explicit, another guy called venom and I just signed some
guys called Lion Fire who I think are going to tear it up. What’s up with your Loopmasters release and
can you please chat about what type of sounds you prepared for this sound
library please? I went back to basics. I was like hang on a minute, a
few of these albums that are out on the net had used our original loops, and
when I first spoke to matt from Loopmasters I said, lets do something original,
something past present and future Ray Keith. Lets represent where those breaks
come from. I actually had one of the guys from loop masters say to me ‘hey Ray
I downloaded your sample pack and I'm a house bod’. I think a lot of people
know the weight that we have on our breaks and on our sound, you know we have a
very unique blue print sound. From our early days If you were in to drum and
bass or jungle clearly just quoting a few of the kids we know today, all the
dubstep boys, some of the major artists that have gone pop kinda listen to us
when they were growing up.
What are your standards for production
Monitors in your sound studio? The monitors I use are the dino audios, but I do draw
reference to the Tannoys to play it back so I can hear what it sounds like in a
club. Your music productions are always fat, how
do you go about creating your tracks? Do you have a creative process? I think its just years of sampling re-sampling and
EQing that we get the roundness. For me it’s all about the weight, when you
have a tune come in and you can hear it, it is phenomenal. Its tough sometimes
cause you don’t want to do what you did last time, but moving forward,
different EQing it different ways of stripping out the breaks and maybe using
it as an underlying little shading in, then you have the heavier stuff on top,
so your always building, always trying something different. Sometimes a mistake
happens, and from that it becomes a blinder. What do you do besides drum and bass that
helps sum up the Ray Keith character in real life? Ray Keith is a different entity to who I am really, I
suppose I have my private side Ray Keith is quite extrovert, out there doing
what he is doing, and I suppose I’m quite reserved, I like to do a lot of
different things when I’m not in the studio I like training I like reading, I
have been to film and acting school for a little while and like watching loads
of films and I love cooking. What is your background? Did you go to a
musical or a sound tech school of any sort? No, I can’t read music; I just completely do it by
ear, which is quite shocking really considering I cant read music. But I just
have a natural vibe and feel for it, and I think all the years that I have been
practicing and doing my stuff it comes around in a lovely way. And I’m very
blessed with that. I think my experience of learning to do stuff with people
has helped us immensely. What does your studio consist of? I’ve got a Mac G4 and an Akai 3200XL and Emu 64, they
are both sampling machines. I’ve got a Tascam 32 track desk with 8 buss, which
means that you can have 8 effects on there through the desk like delay etc.
I’ve got the Dino Audio BM15’s which is what I use for monitoring. I've got
loads of different types of effects modules and the Berringer ones for gates
and delays etc. We have stripped it down, but basically we have Drawmer Noise
filter, a TL8 audio valve compressor and different variable outboards, multi
gate dual affects composers, etc..! What are you using to produce nowadays?
Logic audio? Live? Cubase? I have used Cubase from the early days when it on the
Atari format the ST1040, so I haven’t divulged from that, if it’s not broke
don’t fix it! If you were stranded on an island and had a
portable record player with enough batteries to play one last track, which
track would you choose to listen to? Probably Bob Marley, don’t worry, you know “cause
everything’s gonna be alright”.
