Interview:
How goes the djing for the Far Too Loud? What was your favorite gig so far? Far Too Loud: Things are great! I've been touring all over Europe since January this year and had a great time doing it. Best gig ever? It's hard to say, however I had a great one in Zagreb recently which was just my kind of thing...small and intimate in a packed dark, sweaty room with a pumping sound system. The vibe was spot on!
Are you looking forward to coming to play Montreal with the Cruz Control crew? Have you ever heard of Montreal and if so what have you heard? Speak any french? Far Too Loud: I mentioned this gig to someone recently and their reply was 'Montreal is wild!'. That's all I know...I'm sure it will be! I have remnants of the French I learnt at school left in me but its not much.
What projects are you working on currently and what’s up in the near future? Far Too Loud: Am currently working on my next single, then after that will be working on a remix of a new Funkatech signing. They're called
Where's Huey?
How can you describe your wicked sounds and vibes to virgin Far Too Loud listeners? Far Too Loud: It's a mixture of house, electro and breaks, with lots of big basslines and detailed production. Peak-time stuff. And sometimes a little psychedelic too.
What are your stardands for production Monitors in your sound studio? Far Too Loud: I use KRK VXT 8s, which are great.
I understand you are going solo now.How did you meet up originally to form the, “Far Too Loud”? What’s the story here? Far Too Loud: We originally met when studying sound recording at university and were friends before we started producing stuff together and subsequently forming FTL. The decision to go solo came about last year out of a difference in musical aims and ideas. Dom is now producing stuff under the name Neurodriver and running the excellent Broken Robot recordings label.
When and how have you started to get involved with electronic music? Which were the things that influenced you in order to get involved to? Far Too Loud: I didn't really like dance music before I went to university, then I started going out clubbing getting into it...mainly breakbeat. The production side of it sort of tied in with the course I was doing and eventually the tunes we were making were picked up by people that wanted to release them.
Do you mainly produce or dj? Far Too Loud: I spend the week producing and DJ at the weekend, so time-wise I guess I do more producing, but I do both consistently.
What are your background? Where are you from? Did you go to a musical or a sound tech school of any sort? Do you play any traditional musical instruments? Far Too Loud: I grew up in Kent, in the south-east of England. I started playing saxophone at the age of 10 and have played music all my life since then, in various bands, orchestras and other ensembles. I played a lot of jazz when I was growing up and count myself very lucky to have a good understanding of that music. When it came to go to university I opted out of doing a music degree as I thought it would just leave me unemployed so I opted for a sound recording course at the university of Surrey. It's the top sound recording degree course in the UK and very tough to get on to but was very good training.

How is the international breaks scene going now? What’s your opinion? Far Too Loud: My opinion is that it's not in its hey day but it is not dead either and it will never die. There is still something to be gained from me putting out a big breaks track. My music is not purely breaks though and I think that crossover has helped me to reach out to a wider crowd and survive the shrinking of the scene.
What type of eq programs do you like to use? And what compressors do you swear by? Far Too Loud: EQuality from DMG audio is the best software EQ I have ever used. My standard go-to compressor is the Sonalksis SV-315 although occasionally I'll use something different. I imagine that when DMG audio releases a compressor it will become my standard one.
Does inspiration come easily for you or do you have to strive for it? What’s inspiring you today? Far Too Loud: Depends on the day really. Generally I try to capture a particular atmosphere in my head though, from when I was playing a good gig or watching someone else at a gig, and let that guide me as to the kind of tune I want to write.
Are there any plans for future works, dj gigs etc. Far Too Loud: Of course. I'll be globe trotting here and there for the rest of the year doing both live and DJ gigs, ending the year with a tour in Australia. Plus there will be more singles to see the year out.
Who’s currently rocking the Decks in your world and why? Far Too Loud: I guess, in terms of what I play out, the other artists on Funkatech are bang on it. The Broken Robot Recordings releases are all consistently good too. Another favourite of the moment is French label Boxon, who are putting out some real bangers right now.
What does your studio consist of? Far Too Loud: A computer (PC), speakers, controller keyboard and lots of sound treatment.
What are you using to produce nowadays? Logic audio? Live ? Cubase? Far Too Loud: Ableton Live. The arrange could be given some workflow improvements but apart from that it's awesome.
If you were stranded on an island and had a portable record player with enough batteries to play one last track,,,which track would you choose to listen to? Far Too Loud: Maybe this is kind of gay but the overture from Wagner's Parsifal, my favourite of his operas. Or Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up. Not sure.
Finally what are some of your words of wisdom? Far Too Loud: Not really wisdom, but did you know that I saw a canadian 1 million dollar coin in a museum in Austria. It was huge and made of gold.

Shout outs: Far Too Loud: My girlfriend Amy, Funkatech and anyone else that's supported FTL.
