Interview
Thanks Malente, for taking some time off your busy party rockin schedule. Whats up with you for this summer of 2008? Where are you looking forward to djing now? Malente: Serbia, Canada, USA, Germany, Australia, Thailand is my scedule till end of august. Congradulations for being voted the Top National Act of the German Club Charts, how did this feel to you–I know you have worked really really hard to get that. Malente:When I saw it I could not believe it. It's been a vote by all the german DJs compiling the club charts. It's a big honour and it means that my tunes get actually played out there. I even got more pionts than the intetnational acts like Simian Mobile Disco and Justice. crazy..
You have put out five albums on Unique Records so far since 1999, are you working on the sixth? Malente:No. Albums lost releavance in the dance scene unfortunately. I love the format, but people seem to buy either rock albums or club tracks/12"eps and remixes. The last 2CD WHOW was half mixCD half best remixes, kind of my answer to the problem and it sold quite well. There's still stuff on there that's not even released apart from on WHOW. but al in all as you nowadays release stuff to get dj gigs and not the other way around anymore it does not make scense to work on an album for 6 months release it and it's old after the 7th month. Its far better to release a 12" every 2 months and remixes all four weeks. That does not mean that, if i have a vision for a new album I won't do one. But that would have to be worth the trouble. I am not at this point now. How did you first meet up with Unique Records and how did you get signed on their label? Malente: I played in heir Unique Club 10 years ago with my live band (another music project that time). That's where I met Henry for the first time. A bit later I was invited as a dj and he asked me if I had some instrumental track (that time i was singing/bandmusic a lot). I had some so i licensed the tunes to unique 1999. That's when the first malente 12" called "fertig" saw the light of day.
How did you meet up with your mate Moston? Whats up with him–does he ever bug you? Malente: I met Lars during my communication studies. He was doing house stuff that time (I just had a small hit 12", sampling a boney m. hook). We teamed up and did some french/funky house stuff wich was never released. Some years later, after becoming friends we started a second attemt on making music together and came up with "in the sky", after "fucked up" there'll be a new Moston & Malente 12" called "Do the Right thing" on SPLANK! this September (remixes by Twocker, Clark Able & Bryan Cox). And yes e's bugging me.
How do you and Moston make tracks together? Who does what? Malente: I do the work, Lars rolls the joints. No seriously. We Jam and its always heeps of fun. It takes much longer to get something done but it has this different vibe to it. For me it's also a bit like holiday...
Your latest tracks out, the ones on your myspace page–are serious quality productions, the sound engineering is excellent...who does your mastering and mixdowns? Malente: I do all the mixdowns for my tracks (apart from F*cked up by the way. That was done by my buddy Vance Musgrove from The Aston Shuffle - RESPECT). The mastering is done by Skyline Studios Dusseldorf by the man Kai Blankenberg. This is only when I can chose the mastering guy though. Some labels work with other studios and the remixes are mastered by a lot of different people from all around the globe I don't even know.
Any chance of you on Moston to make a breakbeat in the near future? Malente: Sure, We don't limit ourselves. It won't be what one can call UK Breaks though, more oldschool breaks I guess. I see us getting a bit breakier again. Not too much at the moment but thru the whole Bmore and Rave thing it defenitey came back.
Whats your take on djing? Do you decide what to play during your dj set live? Or do you plan out some of your mixes? Malente: I only plan stuff when I do dj mixes for promotion, All live sets are different ALWAYS. I mean it's about communicating with the people, No? Interaction as they say.
Who's currently rocking your world as a producer and why? Malente: Boy 8-bit, Crookers, Brabe, Fake Blood, Dada Life to name only a few. And that's because they have awesome ideas, and are musically very very talented and they have their trademark sound.
What does your studio consist of? Malente: A computer and a keyboard and a soundcard and some monitors and an espresso machine
What are you using to produce nowadays? Logic audio? Live ? Cubase? Malente: Logic and Ableton
How was it to grow up in the small town of Melante, Germany? How did you get into electronic music? Did you have that love for the urban culture? What do people of Melante think of your career now? Malente: It's MALENTE and it was fine, cause I did not know how big the world was back then. I have been listening to some great radioshows and have been imagening how it is to go out an Acid House party in a huge city like Hamburg. I was in love with the music and did not so much think of it as a cultural thing in the beginning. that changed the more background knowledge I got. Well I ended up doing cultural studies and communication at the university and wrote my final theses about the representational codes of Gangster Rap an their releation to the social structure of Los Angeles. In the end I had that love for the Urban cluture, that's for sure. for 99,9% of the people living in the town i was born in–the music like I produce does not even exist. Radioshows I listened to when I was young did not survive the formated radio. Once they tried to book me as a DJ for "Kurparkfest" wich is a "party" in the park for all the town. There are a lot of traditional groups, and volksmusic acts performing ... most of the people visiting would not have survived me playing there. How do you like living in Munster, Germany now? Has it been very supportive of your talents? Malente: There is not much happening here in Münster, sence Lars Moston moved to Berlin. But my girlfriend is studying around the corner and I'm on the road most of the times anyway. I have beem living in Münster for 15 years now, I can say it is not supportive in any way it's just a bigger Malente (town) full of retarded students who are not interested in music, Or they don't want to spend money, but want to get drunk and go where all the girls are. Münster is not urban at all. I just live here and it's kind of a beautiful small city
Are you a Paul Van Dyk fan? Malente: No
If you were stranded on an island and had a portable record player with enough batteries to play one last track,,,which track would you choose to listen to? Malente: I honestly could not decide and would just wanna die.
Whats going now? What releases should we watchout for? What collaborations do you have coming up? Malente: Scheduled for august on the fabulous Exploited Label: Malente & Dex “Hyperactive” (with amazing remixes by Riva Starr, Bobmo & Bird Peterson). This will be followed by the Moston & Malente release I was talking bout earlier. And then it's gonna be a hot october, november, december with releases on FOOL'S GOLD (A-Trak's Label) and SOUTHERN FRIED (Fatboy Slim's Label). Plus a hell lot of remixes for Stupid Fresh, Dada Life, Myagi, Fort Knox Five, Congorock, Daniel Dexter and more... Shout outs: Malente: If i start shouting, i'd never been able to stop.
