Interview
Whats up Pale Penguin, big ups for your cool label that puts out great Breakbeat / Techno / Down-tempo. Thank you for taking some off your music and the beautiful weather of Greece to answer a few of our silly questions. Can you tell us about your releases so far and what's in store this year for VIM Records and VIM Breaks? Whats the difference? I noticed you have 2 myspace sites. Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Thanks for your good words. Releases are coded V.I.M.BREAKS (for the breaks singles), V.I.M.TECH (for Tech, Minimal singles), V.I.M.TRONICA (for Electronica, Downtempo releases) and V.I.M.CD (for the whole CD albums). We have released 14th singles so far by quality Breaks (The Scientifics, Electric Soulside, Dom Almond, 2Crush, Break The Box), Tech (The Clerks, Petter Pann, Echonomist, Mr.Lookman, Nice, Entek, Gari Marcos), Electronica (Airbus Modular) artists and two full CD Electronica/Downtempo albums (Info, Elica). Our singles are usually backed with remixes by Greek and International artists. Till the end of the year we will release Breaks singles by WI:RE (a 3track single by a German project), the remixes of the WI:RE single (killer remixes by Electric Soulside, Dom Almond, Wasabi and The Scientifics), Syncro 69 (a 2track single by a rather excellent newcomer from Belgium), a bomb by Blatta And Inesha VS Break The Box called "Basket Shoes" (with remixes by Somsay and The Scientifics), and (If we have some free time!) the single "Exploring Axis" by The Scientifics. We will release Tech singles by D.Tolio (a 2track Tech heaven backed with remixes by Airbus Modular and Entek) and SeidenstickerLexgold (a guy from The Havana Boys/Germany backed with remixes by Ed Davenport, Alex Tsiridis and Carlo), an Electronica single by Eyecam (a 5track EP), a special series EP called "One Day You'll Dance For Me Detroit" (coded V.I.M.CITIES Is going to Include 5 Detroit-Tech Influenced tunes by Greek producers), and a 2CD compilation by Greek and International Electronica artists called "RADIO LUNATICA".
When was VIM Records formed? Does it involve your mates from your music group, "The Scientifics" with the other members: Echonomist and Mr.Lookman? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: V.I.M. RECORDS (VERY IMPORTANT MUSIC) formed In April of 2007 by The Scientifics (Me, Echonomist and Mr.Lookman) In order to release quality electronic music for the dancefloor and home-listening. Our motto Is "We're Concerned With Those That Deal In Change!"
How did you and Echonomist and Mr.Lookman first meet up to form the Scientifics in the first place? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: I've met Echonomist and Mr.Lookman before many years and we're close friends. All of us we're djs and we love music so our Interests are quite similar. Echonomist has approached before many-many years giving me a demo of his downtempo project Info (now they run this project together with Mr.Lookman) and we become friends. Mr.Lookman was (and still Is) an excellent guitarist In many bands so It was easy for me to become friend with him. We have formed The Scientifics till mid-2006 In order to produce quality, Innovative and ground-breaking Breaks music. We're mind-blowing oriented Instead of charts success oriented. We usually combine Techno, Minimal and Dubby elements with Breaks basis trying to produce something special and unique.
How can you describe your labels sound to people that never heard of V.I.M.? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: I don’t believe that V.I.M. sound can be described In some words because the range Is wide-open. Our aim Is to provide quality and groundbreaking electronic music, music that can speak to heart, body and soul.
What made you decide to start your own music label? Is it competitive? What's your view? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Our roots are back In New Wave/Punk culture, so a D.I.Y. (do It yourself) aim was always familiar with us. Additionally In the very beginning (and probably till now) most of labels In which we've send demos found our sound too forward-thinking and not too commercial. So we have decided to establish a label In order to release our stuff and other Interesting stuff from all over the world…………………the rest are history. Can you tell us about a bit about the artists on the label? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: The Scientifics are a Minimal Breaks/Tech-House project having releases also for Basstard and Erase, The Clerks are dreamy Minimal, Petter Pann are Echonomist and Lookman In more melodic productions, Echonomist Is a rising Tech star having releases for labels like Two Faces, Bellarine, Drag n' Drop, Klik, Dezign Music,Escada, Candyflip and soon for Resopal and Neovinyl, Mr.Lookman Is an Innovative n' forward-thinking Minimal Tech producer having releases for Escada, Drag n' Drop, Candyflip, 10 To Go, Klik, Timewarp Music and soon for Neovinyl, Electric Soulside are Electro-Breaks stars from Belgium, wonderful guys having releases for Ruff Dog, Breakboots, Flat Out, Erase, Controll Breaks, Potty Mouth and more, Nice Is the French "charged up Luke Skywalker" of Minimal Tech style, Airbus Modular are two prolific Electronica/Tech producers from Thessaloniki with excellent melodic sounds and releases for Digilog, Dezign Music, and Traum, Dom Almond Is a Northampton Breaks star having releases for Fresh Produce, Erase, Systematica, Big Licks, Voodoo Vinyl, Fat! and more, 2Crush are coming from Austin, Texas and Is our friend Adan Salazar (having releases as Sifter and Adan for Boombox and Honchos Music) with Johnny Invisible, Entek Is an uprising young producer from Thessaloniki, Break The Box Is the Italian party-breaks star having releases for Dead Famous, Breakin Even, Ground Level, Basstard, Erase and more, Gari Marcos Is an uprising Spanish electro-house artist, Info Is the downtempo/electronic band of Echonomist and Lookman with Despina vocals and session musicians having already a full CD album and many contributions to compilations, and Elica are an excellent Electronica band from Athens having a full CD album and contributions to many compilations.
Is there a favourite song that you released? What is it? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: All tracks that we've released are very-very good but I must admit that my favourites are: Break The Box's remix to Dom Almond's "In Too Deep"-a dancefloor Breaks/Electro-House bomb, and The Scientifics remix to Electric Soulside's "Lick My Dancefloor"-a forward-thinking Minimal Breaks thing with poppy guitar!
Who does your music mastering? And what is your mastering approach? Whats the sound output your going for? Clean mastering? Hot & loud mastering? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: We have three different people that doing our mastering. All of them are well-educated professionals. One Is responsible for CD albums mastering (he's the most experienced having In his portfolio over 100 albums mastering), the second Is specialized In Breaks sounds and the last Is responsible for Tech/Minimal singles. Usually we're looking for clean mastering sound approaching tracks with a broad perspective, boosting high and low frequencies and decreasing middle ones.
Where do you sell most of your music? Has Beatport been nice to you? Has Trackitdown.net been good? What's your opinion on the two music download sites? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: We sell our music In all major stores (Beatport, DjDownload, Juno, Trackitdown, Breakbeatonline, Addictech, Beats Digital, Dance, Breakbeatonline, Streetwise Digital) and we release some extra limited hand-numbered vinyl 10" singles which can be founded (If you're lucky enough) In Know How Records. We gain success and good sales In Beatport with some of our releases (VIMTECH005, VIMBREAKS009, VIMBREAKS010, VIMTECH012 and VIMBREAKS013) and we can say that our sales are Improving from release to release. We're not gaining the sales that we want In Trackitdown.net till now and we're satisfied only with the sales of VIMBREAKS009 In the store. Both stores are professional, good organized and easy-accessible. Our opinion Is that they have to help more labels to gain satisfactory amounts of sales In terms of marketing and promotion.
Who did all the cool artwork for your releases and your flyers? The graphic design is very excellent and mature! Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Thanks very much! We are very sensitive In artwork terms because we want to be Innovative and ground-breaking In all terms of a release-and artwork Is one of them! All our design (logos, flyers, posters, covers etc.) Is done by LAUNCH, an excellent graphic design team from Thessaloniki. People In Launch are friends with us, high professional, well talented and music lovers, so the connection was easy. They're doing just excellent job for our forthcoming "Radio Lunatica" 2CD compilation!
Has living in Greece been supportive of your music and the label? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: I cannot say that I'm fully satisfied but I've to admit that we're gaining stronger and stronger support everyday. Our CD releases gain strong sales and radio airplay, our V.I.M. Label Nights In Club LIEBE were usually packed and The Scientifics gigs and parties the same. We're not having downloading support from Greece but we're striving for It. Magazines, Radios, other producers, Clubs are supportive to our efforts.
How long have you been DJing for? I know you have an excellent residency in Greece and you get to play at all the major electronic events there. Please tell us about your residency and how that is going, where you plan to take it, and whats up in Greece–besides the beautiful women and great food? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: I've been djing almost my whole life-let's say 15 years now. Last 5 years I've my own residency every Friday night In ELVIS Bar, Thessaloniki, Greece. It's called "Breaktech" (used to be called "Planet Of The Breaks") and from 10 o'clock In the night till very-very late I'm playing Breaks and Tech stuff. I can say that Is the longest Breaks night In Greece! ELVIS Is a beautiful 250-300 people capacity bar opposite to Thessaloniki's port (I can see the sea while I'm djing!). During all these years I've some special guests In my night like Meat Katie, Lee Coombs, Malente, Tom Real, Andy Smith, Aidan Lavelle, Lee Bass, Stama etc. My plans about the night Is to continually giving energy and good music to people, to have more special guests and to do some live jamming with violin, and sax session musicians. Additionally I'm organizing a lot of special parties In Elvis, djing In big festivals throughout Greece, and djing also In LIEBE Club (have done warm-ups for names like KEVIN SAUNDERSON, ATJAZZ, MEAT KATIE, BREAK THE BOX etc.) I'm usually djing where Is dark enough! Greece having beautiful women, great food, sunshine and beautiful Islands for sure but It also have a fast growing Electronic scene with talented artists, and fresh labels (Erase, V.I.M., Klik, Dezign Music, Drag n' Drop, Candyflip, Digilog etc.) I thing that there's a boom In Greek electronic scene the last two years (In terms of production) but that's not reflected In the clubbing scene also-most Greek people prefer traditional Greek music or Greek pop music for their clubbing pleasure.
List some of your favorite electronic producers (past/present): Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: The Clash, The Field Mice, Felt, The Magnetic Fields, Chet Baker, Astrud Gilberto, Martin Denny, The Orb, The Future Sound Of London, Autechre, Dj Krush, Dj Shadow, Ulrich Schnauss, Ceasefire, Meat Katie, Stanton Warriors, Peter Paul, Break The Box, Electric Soulside, Carl Craig, Loco Dice, Minilogue, Radio Slave.
What does your studio consist of? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Our studio consist of Mac Book Pro, Mac Pro, MPC2500, Creamware Pro-12 ASB, Proteus 2000 Emulator, Electribe,Korge Kaos Pad 3, Two Motu Ultra Light and a Yamaha MSP5.
What computer platform is the most common amongst your artists on your label for their music production? PC or Mac? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Mac for sure. It's quality and It's properties are very high so It's preferable by most of them.
What are you using to produce nowadays? Logic audio? Live ? Cubase? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: We're using Logic now. We used to produce with Cubase but last two years we've found Logic more suitable to our needs.
What do you guys drink in Greece? How much can you drink? So you drink and DJ? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Greeks drink a lot of Whisky, Tequilla, Rum, Beer, Wine (we have excellent Red, Rose and White Greek wines!), and Ouzo (a traditional Greek drink with a lot of alcohol and strong taste). We usually drink A LOT! I'm trying not to drink while I'm djing (just one or two drinks) but It's the shots that people are buying me that sometimes are just nightmare! They're saying that I'm playing excellent music and bring me a lot of shots……………so usually the night Is difficult!
What would be your dream track to legally remix? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: "Age Of Love" by AGE OF LOVE or "Theme From S'Express" by S'EXPRESS.
If you were stranded on an island and had a portable record player with enough batteries to play one last track, which track would you choose to listen to? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: "Little Fluffy Clouds" THE ORB
Whats going on this summer for you? What events are you looking forward to? Pale Penguin of V.I.M. Records: Some good relaxing holidays In a Greek Island, some new remixes with The Scientifics, and some powerful Electro-Funky Breaks tunes under Pale The Kid project (me and Kid Stretch). I'm looking forward to every Friday night In Elvis, and a small Winter tour throughout Greece with a new Jazzy Tech n' House djing project alongside a Greek producer called Sunset Blvd.
