The Beat Assassins Exclusive DJ Mix 65mbs
How goes the djing for the Beat Assassins this year and which event was the most memorable so far and why? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): I guess the most memorable event we have played at tin 2008 was The Glade Festival. We played at midnight to a packed breakbeat tent and completely smashed it. Wooz recently played in Romania to 2500 party freaks and we supported Pendulum in Jersey and played in Russia. This year has been busy for us and I must say most of the gigs have been wicked.
Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): Hard question. That’s like asking a parent which is your favourite child. I guess it’s the release “We Run Tings” backed by “Play The Game” since this defined our new sound of urban electro basslines combined with dancehall Ragga vocals over breakbeats. It’s a unique sound and it’s fresh and we are very proud of it. From then came “The Hotness” Ft Yolanda & The Ragga Twins on vocals and this tune always devastates dancefloors wherever we play it; it’s got an uber-phat sound. This tune was backed by Direct Hit that really captured people’s imagination with the big lead, electro hook and slamming beats. Our new release Gun Clip has just dropped and again it encompasses our Urban Electro sound. We plan to release a VIP mixes of Direct Hit in 2009 backed by a Calvertron remix.
What projects are you working on currently and what’s up in the near future? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): In 2009 we are going to roll out a 4 part series on our own label Mofo Recordings called The Urban Electro Project. This will contain productions that have been influenced by electro, dancehall, Ragga & hip-hop. The artwork for the 4 releases will tie together, which will make the package collectable. We believe that branding and marketing is important and we want to give the record-buying public a product. We’ve been collaborating with some dancehall vocalists i.e. The Ragga Twins and Sweetie Irie from the Gorillaz who delivered some amazing double chat. 2009 will see some heavy releases from Beat Assassins.
How can you describe your wicked sounds and vibes to virgin Beat Assassins listeners? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): Urban Electro basslines combined with dancehall, Ragga and Hip-Hop vocals over phat breakbeats.
What are your standards for production Monitors in your sound studio? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): THE MACKIES – They are the bad bwoy monitors, we swear by them.
You guys first met up at a breaks party or what? How did you lads meet up originally to form the, “Beat Assassins”? What’s the story here? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): Wooz walked up to me and said, “I wanna make breakbeat like this!” He was referring to Moguai’s U Know Y, which had just sent everyone wild in Bar Vinyl one drunken Friday night out in Camden, London. The style he was referring to was phat funky breaks which at the time I was heavily influenced by. A few phone calls later and I was sat next to Wooz in his Hertfordshire recording studio remixing Platinum Mules’ The Hammer, which was released our own label Mofo Recordings in May 2006. The remix got consistent plays by Jay Cunning on his Kiss FM radio and Annie Nightingale’s show on Radio 1. As our production style evolved, the hip-hop influences could not be contained. Wooz was one half of the 2002 UK DMC championship team, The Flaredycats, while I have been checking hip-hop tunes since Grandmaster Flash first dropped the Message. The result saw the September 2006 release of Beat Assassins’ remix of B-Phreak’s Repeated Groove, dropping hip-hop flavours on a 135 bpm breakbeat tempo. You couldn’t go to a breakbeat night without hearing this release and the breakbeat community soon realised that there were new kids on the block looking to be major players. From there our sound evolved to what it is today.
What are your backgrounds? Did you, either of you guys go to a musical or a sound tech school of any sort? Do you play any traditional musical instruments? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): Wooz did a music degree and I did the whole rock and punk band thing back when I was a yout.
How is the London breaks scene going now? What’s your opinions? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): Right now out of London there are some really exciting producers. NAPT are one of our favourites alongside Deekline & Wizard. There are also some very talented DJs like Plaza De Funk and Janette Slack plus we love the Stanton Warriors music. We’ve also been enjoying some of the Wonky & Fidget House tunes that have emerged recently; I’d say that these are exciting times for London and music. We are also entering a global recession. In previous recession’s we’ve witnessed the birth of punk in the late ‘70s then came dance in the late ‘80s, so who knows what’s coming?
What’s up with vinyl at the moment? What are you views on how music is distributed and released? Which system is working best for your duo? Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): Vinyl is slowly dying but I think this is due to technology and the fact that digital as a product is way cheaper. The Pioneer CDJ has made DJing with CDs fun and it’s a cool look. Serato Scratch enables DJs to travel the world with their entire record collection on a laptop. Both of these systems we have embraced but we favour CDJ technology for DJing. Also CDs are lighter and easier to travel with and airlines don’t lose them because they are in your hand luggage. Websites like Track It Down, DJ Download & Beatport have enabled DJs to purchase music anywhere they travel. All you need is an internet café. When you weigh it up, vinyl has very little going for it! But there are still the collectors out there and I am one of them. I don’t use vinyl to DJ anymore but I still buy interesting records. I still believe that vinyl is a cool product to a lot of people so while the collectors are out there buying it then we will still release vinyl on Mofo.
Beat Assassins (Jimmy Mofo): I don’t blame anyone for illegally downloading my track. I would be a hypocrite if I minded because I’ve tried this myself in the past. But what I will say is this: Those file sharing programmes, in my opinion, are more hassle than they are worth. It can take a while to find the track you want. Then there is often a queue to download the file. Then it’s not the track you wanted or it’s a lower quality MP3 than you hoped for. If you are buying pop music its 79p on iTunes, whilst on Beatport its £1.99 for brand new exclusive music and £1.49p for non-exclusive. These aren’t large sums of money. These websites have made it really easy to source and buy fantastic music. So if you are still using freeware file sharing software you are either really tight or living in a third world country and too poor to buy music anyway. We have noticed an increase in digital sales this year for Mofo Recordings and I think this figure will keep rising. It would be nice if the government maybe invested in a way to stop file sharing or made an example of some of the big free loaders. But as usual they do fuck all cos it doesn’t affect them.
