I'm pleased to see more efforts in breaks in the New York area, I hope it gets massive there..How is the breaks schooling?
How do you fellows feel about hitting top 10 on the beatport Breaks charts and how did this track, ³Nu Skool Skank feat Chunk n Attack Chunk n Attacks Higher Mix come all about? Drew Down: Hitting the top 10 for the first time was like smelling my first stinky finger! Ya know just one of those times in your life you will never forget. Great to know people are listening to the music. "Skank" came about when my long time friend and partner Sonic Bee got down with Logic and crafted some magic. Glen and I just added some jackin funk to it or Chunk N Attack lol. Polished up a smoking jam Sonic had brought over to the studio. Glen (Chunk) is really the man when it comes to writing jams and getting the musical elements together. I like to focus on the edits and all the little things that make the groove pop and the panties drop! So you guys have your own artists run independent label right? Can you please tell us about it? Drew Down: Yeah man Badbwoy Bass is taking off! We came out strong in the end of 08 with releases that feature some of the top upcoming producers around the globe starting with George Lukin and Curtis B, Jimmy T aka Torqux and one half of Duel Callibre and Twin Law and not to mention my pal DC aka Saint Victim from FL. These guys are really pushing different sounds to the forefront of break beat. Every release has been successful with support from The Autobotz, Stanton Warriors, Jay Cunning, Annie Mac and many other influential Dj's and producers we all respect. We are just amazed at the support and the line up of talent we have put together in a sort time as a label
What projects are you working on currently and what¹s up in the near future? Drew Down: Right now, I have just begun to work on a collaborative electro house album with DC/Saint Victim and remixing a bunch of tunes with my pal Sonic Bee.
How can you describe your wicked sounds and vibes to new listeners? Sonic Bee: head knock, body rock What are your standards for production Monitors in your sound studio? Drew Down: We use Powermacs and Powerbooks running Logic Studio and Ableton. Personally I was turned on to Apple and Logic through my pal Randy Boyer (Flashover/A State Of Trance/ Vandit) one of my favorite producers. I went over to his studio for the first time and was amazed by what he was doing without hardware. He said "I guarantee you sell all your hardware within 6 months" he was absolutely right. Sonic Bee: I stay on my MacBook Pro rockin Logic and and a lil Live.
You guys first met up at a breaks party or what? How did you dudes meet up originally? What¹s the story here? Drew Down: Dude I was 18 @ Sam Ash in New Haven CT working the dj/recording and keyboards department and this funny lookin kid came in with this jenky ass turntable that needed some love. Sonic and I hit it off right there. That next day we did one of those "3 day mix sessions" some of ya'll out there know what I am talking bout! That's when I started schooling this kid on how to dj. Drew Down: I went to The Recording Workshop for poor kids in Ohio. It was a total waste of money without any equipment to play with at home lol. I should have bought some gear instead.. But that was at a time when making music and "tracks" was not nearly as available as it is today with computers. Drew Down: Around there parts here, there are a couple champions to the sound keeping it alive like Sneaker and the Dryer, Melee, Wavewhore, Soappy this kat Endo, some old skoolers keeping it real like Trixie and that is about it off the top of my head.. Sonic may have some more to say about that.
What type of eq programs do you like to use? And what compressors do you swear by? It's not the plugin, it's how it's applied most of the time. These days everything is so available and you can get whatever you want for free. Personally I like the Camel Audio products the best for pretty much everything.. Download the fuckin free Camel Audio Krusher and use the "British Clean" preset on your drum tracks for that punchy UK breaks sound. Sonic Bee: Yeah i second that, the Camel Audio units are nice. Most of EQ's and comps are internal Logic. One of my friends swears by the Waves units, i've seen those in action in his ProTools rig and i liked their set-up.
I really think your track "Love Once Upon A Time" is dope! How do you guys work together to make tracks? Drew Down: Actually it's an idea I had going to the Brooklyn Zoo with Glen (Chunk of Chunk N Attack) and his kids, we get pretty excited when we listen to stuff in the car. Got to talking about dope jams and that is how it came about.. Glen kinda ran with it and there you have it.. During that same car ride is when the name "Chunk N Attack" came about.. we was talking about what our music needed on a particular project! What does your studio consist of? Drew Down: An Apple Powerbook g5 2.16 with 4gb Ram Logic Studio, a Powermac Dual G5 4gb Ram, A diesel custom PC (Stole it from Sonic Bee shh don't tell em) and an Dell XPS laptop, Event Monitors, Native Instruments Komplete with Kore2. Both of our studios are configured the same so we can share and collab easy. Drew Down: Apple Logic and Ableton
