The Cystal Method Breakbeat.ca September 2009 Feature BBLEGENDS01
Whats up gentlmen, thank you kindly for taking some time off your lengendary sound production to chat a bit about yourselfs and your excellent new album that is now out, "Divided By The Night". How long did this last album take for Production and how do you feel about this accomplishment? The Crystal Method: Divided By Night took about 2 years in the studio. We feel it's our best album yet and we're very proud of it.
Can you please tell us about the sounds and styles of music you incorporated in this current album, "Divided By The Night"? The Crystal Method: We have a few more collaborations on this one than usual but feel that they all work. We didn't stick to all breakbeat. You guys just worked on some of the tracks for the, "ESPN XGames 3D The Movie - Opens Friday 8/21!". How did this project come about and are you guys hyped on it or what? The Crystal Method: We got to see an amazing premiere of the movie on the first night of X-Games in L.A. It was really amazing! 3D has come such a long way, we were very proud to be a part of that film.
What’s your favourite track on the album, "Divided By The Night"? The Crystal Method: My favorite track is a change of pace for us, it's Falling Hard, it features an amazing artist, Meiko. I still get goose bumps every time I hear it.
What projects you guys working on in the near future that you are looking forward too? The Crystal Method: We've got a new video and remixes coming out for "Come Back Clean" from Divided By Night. We also will be doing the "Electronic Stimulus Package" tour this fall. And we'll be doing a new remix for The Doors later this year.
What are your stardands for production Monitors in your sound studio? The Crystal Method: PMC we love them.
How did you dudes meet up originally to form the, “The Crystal Method”? What’s the story here? The Crystal Method: We grew up in Las Vegas and met there. We both were working on different things separately and then combined our gear and talents. A few short years later The Crystal Method was born.
What are your backgrounds? Did you, either of you guys go to a musical or a sound tech school of any sort? Do you play any traditional musical instruments? The Crystal Method: I took some piano classes in college and I took every music production/ recording engineering class they had (UNLV). Scott actually took guitar lessons from Mark Slaughter (Slaughter).
What type of eq programs do you like to use? And what compressors do you swear by? The Crystal Method: I like the API 550 and 560 from Waves. I like the SSL compressor as well. But I love the L3 Multi-Maximizer!
Do you guys still use your Emu Ultra hardware samplers, like how you guys used to go on tour with years ago? Or you guys are totally digital now in sound production? The Crystal Method: I now use Kontakt for the live show but Scott still uses an E4.
The Crystal Method has gone all arround the world, is it possible to have a favourite place that you have performed at so far? Any good stories for us? The Crystal Method: There have been so many magical shows, 60,00 people at RFK stadium in D.C., our first time in Brazil, a few weeks ago in Budapest. But I would have to say our favorite shows are almost always a small town that we've never been to before.
List some of your favorite electronic producers (past/present): The Crystal Method: My favorite producers (electronic or otherwise) Butch Vig, Rick Rubin,William Orbit, Trevor Horne, Mutt Lange, John Brion
What does your studio consist of? The Crystal Method: Pro Tools, Macs, lots of analog synths, Nords, stomp boxes, Andromeda A6, lots of room and natural light.
What are you using to produce nowadays? Logic audio? Live ? Cubase? The Crystal Method: Pro Tools
